Background of the Study:
Traditional land tenure systems in Ikot Ekpene have long governed land allocation, use, and inheritance within communities. These systems, embedded in cultural practices and social structures, influence agricultural productivity, local investment, and economic development (Ekeruo, 2023). Customary laws and communal ownership principles shape land usage patterns and resource management. In recent years, the integration of modern economic practices has raised questions about the compatibility of traditional tenure systems with contemporary development needs (Udo, 2024). Conflicts such as land disputes and limited access to credit have emerged, potentially hindering economic growth. This study investigates the impact of traditional land tenure on economic development and explores ways to harmonize customary practices with modern economic demands (Obi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Traditional land tenure systems in Ikot Ekpene present both cultural continuity and economic challenges. The reliance on customary practices often clashes with modern economic demands, leading to inefficiencies in land utilization and investment (Udo, 2024). This study addresses the conflicts between traditional land management and economic development, seeking to identify factors that hinder progress while preserving cultural heritage (Obi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of traditional land tenure on economic development.

  2. To identify challenges arising from integrating traditional tenure with modern practices.

  3. To propose strategies that harmonize traditional land tenure with economic growth.

Research Questions:

  1. How do traditional land tenure systems influence economic development in Ikot Ekpene?

  2. What challenges arise from the integration of customary and modern land management?

  3. What strategies can improve economic outcomes while preserving traditional tenure?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional land tenure systems significantly affect local economic development.

  2. Conflicts between customary and modern land management hinder economic progress.

  3. Policy interventions can harmonize traditional tenure with economic growth.

Significance of the Study:
This study elucidates the interplay between traditional land tenure and economic development. Its findings will inform policy reforms that balance cultural preservation with modern economic demands, promoting sustainable development (Ekeruo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Ikot Ekpene Local Government, Akwa Ibom State, focusing solely on traditional land tenure’s impact on economic development. Limitations include potential legal ambiguities and reliance on historical data.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Traditional Land Tenure: Customary systems governing land ownership and usage.

  2. Economic Development: Processes that improve economic well-being and quality of life.

  3. Customary Law: Traditional rules and practices regulating community affairs.
